If you’ve ever worked with the very beginning-est of readers—especially 3- and 4-year-olds—you know how tricky it can be to find books that truly meet them where they are. Most emergent readers on the market are designed with Kindergarten in mind. But there’s a big developmental leap between a Kindergarten reader and a preschooler just starting their literacy journey.
As a preschool teacher, I wanted more for my students—more success, more confidence, more joy in their earliest reading experiences. That’s why I created the Tiny Readers Club!
The Problem: Preschoolers Need Their Own Kind of Emergent Readers
Most of my students haven’t yet mastered all their uppercase and lowercase letters, let alone all the sounds. But that doesn’t mean they can’t start exploring books. In fact, I believe the best way to build those foundational pre-reading skills—like tracking print, one-to-one correspondence, and left-to-right directionality—is by reading real books that are made just for them!
Too many beginner readers are overly simplistic and repetitive in a way that doesn’t engage preschoolers: “I see a bat. I see a car. I see…”
Sure, that kind of text is so much better than nothing, but what if we could offer something that’s both supportive AND delightful?
The Solution: Enter the Tiny Readers Club
I’ve started creating my own line of preschool-friendly emergent readers—and I’m LOVING it. These books are:
✨ Simple and supportive – with just a few repeating words, picture clues, and predictable structure
📚 Designed for skill-building – not just guessing! A touch of variation keeps kids tracking each word
🎉 Playful and fun – because preschoolers deserve giggles while they read
🎨 Age-appropriate and accessible – each book ties into preschool themes and/or student interests
🖍️ Black & white versions included – perfect for coloring and saving ink
✍️ Designed with teachers and parents in mind too - half-page format with minimal prep
I aim to send home an emergent reader almost every week—and now I finally have books that I match my students and my needs!
The response from my students has been everything I hoped for. When a child realizes, “I can read this!”—their whole face lights up. It builds confidence, motivation, and that spark that makes them want to keep learning.
More Than Just Books
The Tiny Readers Club isn’t just about the books—though they’re at the heart of it. I’m also creating matching bookmarks and reading aids to extend the learning, make reading feel special, and keep kids excited to return to their books again and again.
Parents love seeing tangible progress and growth in their little ones. And I love knowing I’m helping lay a joyful foundation for a lifelong love of reading.
