Terrific Tt!

Toot! Toot!

Toot! Toot!

We has a great time playing with trains and instruments like tubas and trumpets!  We made a graph of the different textures we touched.  We practiced counting to 10!  We had another great week!

Treasure Trip

The slideshow below shows one of our lessons that we did as a class and then the kids could play during centers. We "packed" our imaginary adventure bags and chanted together:

  • We're going on treasure trip!
  • We're not terrified!
  • We're going to find some treasure!
  • And have a terrific time!

When we encountered terrifying creatures we used the magic Tt sound to make them disappear.  T t t t t t t t! When we finally found the treasure we use our tools to open it up to find it full of items that start with Tt like a Teddy Bears, truck, toothpick, and lots of letter T's.  We used the T's to twirl, tip, trot, and more!

Preparing for Preschool

Preschool is such an exciting step for you and your child!  Here are a few things you can do to prepare for a successful start:

  1. Talk about it!  Let them voice any concerns but keep the tone positive and excited when possible.
  2. Get them involved in the process of preparing and give them choices when possible.  Let them choose what to wear the first day, pick out a small backpack or sack they can use to bring papers homes in (and help them put a picture of your family inside), etc.
  3. Practice.  Play preschool with them.  Going to storytime at the library is a great way to practice listening skills.  If they aren't used to other kids their age, arrange some playdates to help develop important social skills. Practice independent skills like going to the bathroom and putting on their backpack.
  4. If your child is not used to being away from you, start leaving them with a friend or family member for short periods of time.  This can help to ease an seperation anxiety on the 1st day of school.
  5. Saying goodbye on the first day is best if kept short.  You can even practice a special goodbye handshake or hug ahead of time.
  6. Here's a fun list of books about getting ready for the first day of preschool: http://elemenopkids.com/getting-ready-for-the-first-day-of-preschool-books/
  7. Take them to our Meet the Teacher Night!  See the calendar for exact dates and times for your class.

Antelope Island

We had a great field trip to Antelope Island!  We started out with a naturalist talk in the visitor center by one of the park rangers.  We learned about the wildlife on the island and got to touch furs and horns!  Then many of us braved a hike and were richly rewarded with beautiful views!  A few families even stayed to wade in the water and catch brine shrimp.  It was a beautiful day for our final field trip!

Field Trip to the Fire Station

We were privileged to enjoy a field trip by our wonderful community heroes at the fire station.  They taught us with an entertaining video about fire stations.  Then we got to tour the fire station.  It was impressive to Firefighter Stein in full gear and we learned how important it is to never run away or hide from them because they are there to help you.  The highlight for several of the kids was getting to sit in the fire engine!  We left with hats on our heads, stickers on our chest, and happy hearts.  Thank you Syracuse Fire Department!

Yummy or Yucky?

Part of our "Yellow Carnival" included a Yummy/Yucky challenge.  We tried at least two tiny bites of each food and voted if they were yummy or yucky.  We then sorted the items in a simple graph to help us analyse the data.  It was great fun and learning!  Thanks for all those who donated an item for us to taste!

At least one of the classes put the following items in the "Yummy" column of our graph:

  • Yogurt
  • Raisins
  • Gluten-free crackers
  • Chocolate
  • Marshmallows
  • Apple juice
  • Blueberries
  • Fruit snacks
  • Cookies
  • Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Peanuts
  • Cotton Candy
  • Lemons
  • Twinkies

At least one of the classes put the following items in the "Yucky" column of our graph:

  • Jalapeno pepperonis
  • Dark chocolate
  • Raisins
  • Peanuts
  • Yellow Bell Peppers
